metro system
Underground transit network
A metro system is an urban rail transit network, typically running underground through city centers with elevated or surface sections in outlying areas.
The term encompasses subways, undergrounds, and rapid transit systems designed to move large numbers of commuters efficiently: Paris has one of the oldest metro systems in the world.
Metro systems are distinguished from commuter rail by their higher frequency and shorter distances between stops.
