ochres

Yellowish brown pigments

Ochres is the plural of ochre, an earthy pigment ranging from yellow to deep orange-red, used since prehistoric times in cave paintings and still employed in art and decoration.

The color comes from iron oxide in clay.

Ochre also describes the yellowish-brown color itself: the ochres of the desert landscape.

Spelled ocher in American English.
