oater

Frontier film genre

An oater is a Western—a film, TV show, or novel set in the American Old West.

The term comes from the horses that define the genre, fed on oats and ridden through every cattle drive and shootout.

The word is informal and mildly nostalgic, evoking low-budget Saturday matinee Westerns: He spent his childhood watching oaters on TV.
