art film
Highbrow motion picture
An art film prioritizes artistic expression, experimentation, or thematic depth over commercial appeal.
Art films often feature unconventional narratives, ambiguous endings, or challenging subject matter: We watched a French art film with subtitles.
The term sometimes carries mild condescension, implying something pretentious or inaccessible: It's one of those art films where nothing happens.
