security guarantees

Pledged safety commitments

Security guarantees are formal commitments by one nation to defend another against attack.

The term appears most often in diplomacy and international relations: NATO membership comes with security guarantees from all member states.

Such guarantees may be codified in treaties or exist as understood obligations.

Their credibility depends on the guarantor's willingness and ability to follow through—a security guarantee is only as strong as the commitment behind it.
