newel post
Banister's main support
A newel post is the main vertical post at the top or bottom of a staircase, anchoring the handrail.
It's typically thicker and more ornamental than the balusters that run between newels.
The term newel alone often means the same thing: She gripped the newel post as she started up the stairs.
