neuromelanin
Dark neuronal pigment
Neuromelanin is a dark pigment found in certain neurons of the brain, particularly in regions like the substantia nigra and locus coeruleus.
It accumulates with age and gives these brain areas their characteristic color.
The loss of neuromelanin-containing neurons is associated with Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions.
