neo-orthodoxy

Dialectical theological movement

Neo-orthodoxy is a twentieth-century Protestant theological movement reacting against liberal theology's optimism about human nature and progress.

Associated with Karl Barth and Reinhold Niebuhr, it reasserted traditional doctrines—human sinfulness, divine transcendence, the authority of scripture—while accepting modern biblical criticism.

The movement emphasized the radical distinction between God and humanity, and the impossibility of knowing God except through revelation.
