expatriating

Departing one's country

Expatriating is the act of leaving one's native country to live elsewhere, or of renouncing citizenship.

A person expatriates themselves by moving abroad permanently: She's expatriating to Portugal for the lower cost of living.

Governments can also expatriate someone by stripping their citizenship, though this is rare.

The noun expatriate (often shortened to expat) describes someone who has done this.
