naturalize

Make a citizen

To naturalize is to grant citizenship to a foreign-born person, making them legally equivalent to native-born citizens: She was naturalized after five years of residency.

The word extends to introducing foreign plants or animals so they thrive as if native: Dandelions have naturalized across North America.

More abstractly, to naturalize something is to make it seem normal or inevitable—what was once foreign becomes unremarkable: The practice has become so naturalized that no one questions it.
