Glacier's compacted snow
Névé is granular snow that has partially melted and refrozen but hasn't yet compressed into glacial ice.
It represents an intermediate stage between fresh snow and the dense ice of a glacier, found in the accumulation zones of glaciers and permanent snowfields.
The term comes from a Swiss French dialect word for glacier.
The climbers crossed a broad field of névé below the summit.
