alpenglow

Peak sunset radiance

Alpenglow is the rosy or golden light that illuminates mountain peaks just before sunrise or after sunset, when the sun is below the horizon but its rays still catch the summits.

The effect is particularly striking on snow-covered peaks: We watched the alpenglow fade from the Rockies.

The word comes from German and is used mainly in mountaineering and nature writing.
