penitentes
Ice blade formations
Penitentes are tall, blade-like formations of hardened snow or ice found at high altitudes, particularly in the Andes.
They form through differential melting and sublimation under intense sunlight, creating fields of jagged spires that can reach several meters high.
The name comes from their resemblance to hooded penitents in religious processions.
Penitentes present significant obstacles to mountaineers: We spent hours navigating through the penitentes.
