myriapod

Leggy soil dweller

A myriapod is any arthropod belonging to the subphylum Myriapoda, characterized by having many body segments and many legs—the name comes from Greek words meaning "countless feet." The group includes centipedes, millipedes, and their lesser-known relatives.

Despite the name, no myriapod actually has ten thousand legs; centipedes typically have between 30 and 354 legs, while some millipedes approach 750.

The garden was full of myriapods hiding under rocks and rotting logs.
