ocelli

Insect light sensors

Ocelli is the plural of ocellus, a simple eye found in insects and other invertebrates, distinct from compound eyes.

These small, light-sensitive organs typically detect brightness rather than forming images.

The term also applies to eye-like spots on animals—the circular markings on peacock feathers or butterfly wings: The moth's ocelli startled predators.
