mudlarker

Tidal treasure hunter

A mudlarker is someone who scavenges in river mud for objects of value, particularly along the Thames in London.

Historically, mudlarks were among the poorest Victorian scavengers, searching tidal banks for coins, nails, or anything sellable.

Today mudlarking has become a hobby—licensed enthusiasts hunt for historical artifacts: She's a dedicated mudlarker who's found Roman coins and clay pipes.
