clay pipes
Terracotta tobacco tubes
Clay pipes are smoking pipes made from fired clay, historically the most common form of tobacco pipe from the 16th through 19th centuries.
They were cheap, disposable, and often broke, leaving fragments that archaeologists now use to date historical sites.
The long stem supposedly cooled the smoke.
The dig uncovered dozens of clay pipe stems.
