The lowland gorilla is either of two subspecies of gorilla inhabiting the forests of central and western Africa, distinguished from mountain gorillas by their lower-elevation habitat.
The western lowland gorilla is the most common gorilla in zoos and the wild, while the eastern lowland gorilla is the largest of all gorillas.
