metrification
Adopting metric units
Metrification is the process of converting to the metric system of measurement.
Countries undergoing metrification replace customary units like miles, pounds, and gallons with kilometers, kilograms, and liters.
Canada's metrification in the 1970s changed road signs from miles to kilometers.
The word is sometimes spelled metrication.
