English units
Miles and pounds
English units are the traditional measurements used in the United States and historically in Britain: inches, feet, miles, ounces, pounds, gallons, and the like.
The term distinguishes these from metric units.
Though called English, Britain has largely abandoned them for the metric system, while Americans retain them for everyday use: The recipe calls for cups and tablespoons, not grams.
