meristems

Growth tissue zones

Meristems are regions of plant tissue where active cell division occurs, producing new growth.

Found at root tips, shoot tips, and in layers beneath bark, meristems generate the cells that become leaves, stems, roots, and wood.

Unlike most animal cells, meristematic cells remain undifferentiated and capable of dividing throughout the plant's life: The apical meristem drives upward growth.
