primordium

Embryonic tissue precursor

A primordium is the earliest recognizable stage of an organ or structure in an embryo—the cellular cluster from which a limb, leaf, or organ will develop.

In biology, primordia (the plural) represent the foundational material before differentiation occurs: The heart primordium appears in the third week of human development.

The term extends to any rudimentary beginning of something that will later elaborate into complex form.
