fate mapping
Cell ancestry tracking
Fate mapping is a technique in developmental biology for tracing which cells in an embryo will become which adult tissues.
By marking or labeling cells early in development, researchers can follow their descendants and determine their developmental fate: Fate mapping revealed that these cells give rise to the entire nervous system.
The resulting diagram is called a fate map.
