mercury switch

Liquid metal toggle

A mercury switch is an electrical switch that uses a small amount of liquid mercury to open or close a circuit.

Tilting the switch causes the mercury to flow, making or breaking contact between electrodes.

Once common in thermostats and silent light switches, mercury switches have largely been replaced due to environmental concerns about mercury disposal.
