mercer

Silk and velvet

A mercer is a dealer in textiles, particularly fine fabrics like silk, velvet, and other expensive cloths.

The term is largely historical—mercers were prominent in medieval and early modern commerce, and the word survives mainly in British place names and the Worshipful Company of Mercers, one of London's ancient guild companies.

The mercer displayed bolts of imported silk.
