megalodon

Prehistoric giant shark

Megalodon was a massive prehistoric shark that lived roughly 23 to 3.6 million years ago, the largest shark species known to have existed.

Its name means "giant tooth," and fossil teeth—some over six inches long—are the primary evidence of its existence.

Modern references often invoke megalodon as shorthand for something impossibly huge or terrifyingly powerful: That wave was like a megalodon coming at us.
