market cross

Historic trading marker

A market cross is a monument, typically a stone cross or covered structure, marking the site of a medieval market in a British town.

These structures served as the commercial and social center where traders gathered and goods were sold.

Many survive as historic landmarks in town squares: The weekly farmers' market still meets at the old market cross.
