margin note
Written beside text
A margin note is text written or printed in the blank space alongside the main body of a page.
Readers add margin notes to mark passages, jot reactions, or cross-reference other sources.
In published works, margin notes may summarize content or provide commentary: The margin notes in her old textbook revealed how much her thinking had changed.
Also called a marginal note or marginalia.
