endnotes

Trailing scholarly citations

Endnotes are numbered references or explanatory comments collected at the end of a chapter, article, or book.

They work like footnotes but appear at the back rather than at the bottom of each page: The endnotes run for thirty pages.

Writers use them to cite sources, add tangential information, or elaborate without cluttering the main text.
