maquettes
Preliminary sculpture drafts
Maquettes are small preliminary models, especially in sculpture or architecture.
An artist creates a maquette to work out proportions, composition, and details before committing to a full-scale piece: The museum displayed Rodin's maquettes alongside the finished bronzes.
In theater and film, maquettes help visualize sets or characters before production.
