manic-depressive

Mood disorder patient

Manic-depressive describes the psychiatric condition now usually called bipolar disorder, characterized by alternating episodes of mania (elevated mood, energy, impulsivity) and depression.

The term also describes a person with this condition: Her manic-depressive mother could be exuberant one week and bedridden the next.

In casual use, it loosely describes any dramatic mood swings.
