make-ready

Pre-production calibration process

Make-ready is the preparation work required before a printing press can run a job—adjusting paper feed, aligning plates, setting ink levels.

The term extends to any preliminary setup that must be completed before production begins: The make-ready took longer than the actual print run.

In manufacturing and theater, make-ready similarly describes the process of preparing equipment or a stage for operation.
