mahatma

Venerated spiritual teacher

Mahatma is a Sanskrit title of respect meaning "great soul," applied to revered spiritual leaders in India.

Though it can describe any venerated figure, in English it's almost always attached to Mohandas Gandhi, the leader of India's independence movement: Mahatma Gandhi advocated nonviolent resistance.

The word combines "maha" (great) with "atman" (soul or self).
