luminaria

Paper bag light

Luminaria is a small lantern made by placing a candle inside a paper bag weighted with sand.

The bags line walkways and rooftops, especially in the American Southwest during Christmas celebrations: The neighborhood glowed with hundreds of luminarias on Christmas Eve.

The tradition has Spanish colonial roots.

Plural: luminarias or luminaria.
