mourning veil
Funeral face covering
A mourning veil is a dark, typically black veil worn over the face or hat as part of funeral attire or during a period of grief.
Historically associated with widows, the veil signaled bereavement and provided a degree of privacy during public mourning: She lifted her mourning veil to dab at her eyes.
The practice has largely faded in Western culture but persists in formal or traditional contexts.
