long jump pit
Sand-filled landing zone
A long jump pit is the sand-filled landing area at the end of a long jump runway, designed to cushion the jumper's landing and clearly show where they touched down.
The sand is raked smooth between attempts so officials can measure from the nearest mark to the takeoff board: She sailed through the air and landed cleanly in the pit.
