log drive

River lumber transport

A log drive is the historical practice of floating cut timber downstream to sawmills, once the primary method of transporting logs from remote forests before railroads and trucks.

Workers called log drivers or river pigs guided the floating logs, breaking up jams with pike poles and peaveys.

The spring log drive brought thousands of logs down the river.

The practice was common in North America and Scandinavia through the early twentieth century and has largely disappeared.
