loculi

Catacomb wall recesses

Loculi is the plural of loculus, a small compartment or chamber.

The word appears mainly in technical contexts: in biology, loculi are the cavities within an ovary or anther that contain seeds or pollen; in archaeology and architecture, loculi are the rectangular niches carved into catacomb walls to hold bodies.

The tomb contained twelve loculi arranged in three tiers.
