linked genes
Co-inherited genetic neighbors
Linked genes are genes located on the same chromosome that tend to be inherited together rather than assorting independently.
The closer two genes are on a chromosome, the more likely they'll travel as a unit during reproduction: Eye color and wing shape in fruit flies are linked genes.
Crossing over during meiosis can separate linked genes, but the linkage reduces how often this happens.
