lineprinter

Old computing peripheral

A lineprinter is a high-speed printer that prints an entire line of text at once rather than character by character.

These machines dominated early computing, producing reams of output on continuous fanfold paper.

The term persists in computing contexts even as the technology has largely been replaced by laser and inkjet printers.

Also spelled as two words: line printer.
