letter of introduction
Vouching for someone
A letter of introduction is a formal document presenting one person to another, typically written by someone who knows both parties.
It vouches for the bearer's character or credentials and requests that the recipient extend courtesy or consideration: She carried a letter of introduction from her professor to the museum director.
Once essential for business and social advancement, letters of introduction have largely been replaced by email introductions and LinkedIn connections.
