blackball

Vote someone out

To blackball someone is to exclude them from a group or organization, typically by secret vote.

The term comes from the practice of casting black balls into a ballot box to register opposition.

Now it applies broadly to any rejection or ostracism: He was blackballed from the country club after the scandal.

As a noun, a blackball is such a negative vote.
