pertussis
Bacterial whooping cough
Pertussis is the medical term for whooping cough, a highly contagious bacterial respiratory infection.
The name comes from the violent coughing fits that characterize the disease—intense spasms followed by a distinctive high-pitched "whoop" as the patient gasps for air.
The pertussis vaccine is part of the standard DTaP immunization series.
