landgrab

Aggressive property acquisition

A landgrab is a swift, aggressive acquisition of territory or resources, often by force or questionable means.

Originally literal—seizing land from indigenous peoples or during colonial expansion—the term now applies figuratively to any aggressive takeover: a corporate landgrab for market share, a landgrab for streaming rights.
