knee cap
Joint's bony cover
The kneecap is the small, flat bone at the front of the knee joint, protecting the connection between thigh and shin.
Also called the patella.
To kneecap someone is to shoot or otherwise shatter this bone—a punishment associated with paramilitary groups: The IRA kneecapped informers.
By extension, to kneecap can mean to sabotage or cripple: Budget cuts kneecapped the program.
