kleptomania
Pathological theft urge
Kleptomania is a compulsive urge to steal things, typically items of little value or personal use.
Unlike ordinary theft, it's driven by psychological impulse rather than need or profit: Her kleptomania meant she couldn't enter a store without pocketing something.
The term carries clinical connotations, sometimes invoked as an excuse for shoplifting.
