junto

Scheming political faction

A junto is a small group of people united for a common purpose, typically political.

The word often carries connotations of secrecy or self-interest—a cabal or faction working behind the scenes: The junto met privately to consolidate power.

Benjamin Franklin famously organized a junto for mutual improvement in colonial Philadelphia, giving the word more neutral associations in American usage.
