jerrycans

Portable fuel containers

Jerrycans are robust, flat-sided fuel containers, typically holding about five gallons.

The design—rectangular with a recessed seam and three handles—originated in Germany before World War II and was widely copied.

The name comes from "Jerry," British slang for Germans.

Also spelled jerry cans or jerry-cans: We loaded three jerrycans of diesel into the truck bed.
