jackscrew

Mechanical lifting device

A jackscrew is a lifting device that uses a threaded shaft turned by a handle or motor to raise heavy loads—vehicles, buildings, or machinery.

The screw mechanism converts rotational force into powerful vertical lift, allowing one person to raise thousands of pounds: He positioned the jackscrew under the beam and began cranking.

Also called a screw jack.
