intima

Artery's inner coat

The intima is the innermost layer of a blood vessel or lymphatic vessel, in direct contact with flowing blood or lymph.

It consists of a thin layer of endothelial cells and underlying connective tissue.

Medical contexts often reference the intima when discussing arterial disease: Plaque builds up in the intima of coronary arteries.

Plural: intimae.
